So it's that time of year again, and if you're a parent it's like Christmas Day. I speak, of course Back to School time. A time where dozens of children finally give relief to their parents after a three month vacation. Thinking back when I was a kid, the first day of school meant sharing stories of summer fun, getting to know new teachers, and new subjects. However the first day of school also served as an unofficial fashion show for everyone to show off their new styles. Sadly back then kid styles consisted of Power Rangers, Michael Jordan jerseys during that whole "I want to be like Mike" campaign (I know I'm dating my age here), and Disney characters. I myself, unfortunately fell victim to Tweety Bird, and crappy cutesy animal appliques, because my grandmother thought they were adorable. Fortunately for today's children returning to the classroom, there are better options. Not having any children of my own; I was extremely curious on what was currently trending in children's wear. I decided to reach out to a good friend of mine named Simone who shared with me that her daughter loves "long, colorful socks, and silly bands with her uniforms." I forgot to mention that in some parts of Kansas City where I live, uniforms are required for most elementary and middle school students. Even still this inspired me to find similar forms of pizazz and whimsy in other articles of children's wear. For me, of course, this meant a trip to one of my favorite stores, Nordstrom. Cool Looks For GirlsSo as I mentioned earlier, my friend shared with me that her daughter loves to wear colorful socks with her school uniforms. This prompted me to look into this trend. I remembered in previous school semesters seeing little girls wear all sorts of socks and tights in an array of colors. I guess if you're going to have to wear a drab uniform; you might as well add a little pizazz to it. As with any great look, nothing completes it quite like the right pair of shoes. As we all know the right pair of tennis shoes is a major back to school staple. They must be durable, they must be comfortable, and above all they must look awesome! And now for the fashions. Now I have to admit, I really enjoy going through the girls' section from time to time looking at all of the pretty little things girls wear today. One thing that I really love about places like Nordstrom is that instead of relying solely on the typical animated stock character, they focus on bringing in designer labels with a little more imagination to offer. Layered looks are the best for young girls, because it allows them to be able to switch up pieces based off of their personal style and mood. Also, since the weather will soon be cooling down, layered looks allows room for warmth pieces such as a scarf or a heavier sweater. I remember when I was a kid in the early 1990's; one of my favorite tv shows was Blossom. For all of you Big Bang Theory Fans that would be Mayim Bialik's earlier roles when she was a teenager. One of the great highlights of the show for me, besides the cool dance moves in the opening credits, was her awesome eclectic clothing. Blossom Russo would definately approve of this floral high/lo dress. Paired with tights, and boots, it's the 90's revived. If you thought the first day of school arrived quickly, just wait until picture day. Dressier items will definitely come into play. One thing I have learned from observing parents purchasing clothes for their children is that separates are key. It allows for the parent to dress their children in a variety of looks, without having to buy numerous pieces. Like with any wardrobe, and a graphic tee is the easiest to work with. Both tee and jean can be worn alone with tennis shoes for an ultra casual look or dressed up with a chic vest or sweater. Boys LooksBoys clothing are far more versatile than most people believe. For boy's wear its about the fusion of both comfort and style. So there you have it! Of course, there is so much more to the first day of school than just first day fashions. There is getting reacquainted with old friends as well as making new ones. As well as enriching the mind through important studies such as math, reading, and writing. And if the next time your kids moan about whether or not any of those subjects will be important to them later in life. With confidence, reply "Yes!" A good education can open the doors to so many possibilities whether if it's teaching, building computers, or writing your own fashion blog. Till next time, may your kids have a wonderful school year, and stay fabulous!!! Special thanks to the good people at Nordstrom. Overland Park, KS.
